Next week, RPL hosts two Wednesday programs for adults, and the Youth Services Department presents programs for fall and Halloween. As a reminder, the library will be closed on Monday, Oct. 12, for staff in-service training.

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m., RPL’s Local History and Genealogy group will see a Zoom presentation from Pommerscher Verein Freistadt, a Milwaukee group dedicated to preserving Pomeranian heritage through the study of its history, genealogy, culture and language. Terry Schoessow will give an introduction to the group and its activities, and demonstrate its genealogical database of over 188,000 names.

Many families in Sauk County can trace their ancestry to this Russian/German province. Come to the library to view the presentation on the big screen, or receive your own link to view from home. If you would like to receive your own link, and have not attended the Local History group before, please contact library staff to sign up.

On Wednesday evening at 6 p.m., author Randy Hoffman will visit the library to present his book, “Great Nature Wisconsin: A Guide for Nature Immersion in Wisconsin.” The book, co-written by Hoffman’s daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Cody Stingley, is a comprehensive guidebook to natural areas in Wisconsin for families to enjoy together. State and county parks, forests, and natural areas are included. Each area is covered by a double page spread featuring a color photograph, and ratings for natural diversity, physical challenge, accessibility, serenity, and night skies, as well as featured activities and amenities. The author will have books available for purchase. There is no registration or fee required to attend this program.

Spooky Bingo is the main event for RPL’s Family Fun Night scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. Come in costume to play a Halloween themed bingo game and win prizes. Earlier in the day, at 4 p.m., Time Travelers (Grades K-2) will focus on the history of some of our Halloween customs. Stories for Baby and Me as well as Preschool Storytimes will be about pumpkins next week.

A new canine reading pal will visit the Library on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 3:30 p.m. Tom Pawlisch and his Chesapeake Bay retriever, Josey, will be here for our Paws to Read program. Students may sign up at the Library’s front desk for a 15 minute reading slot between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. to practice their reading with a four-footed friend. The program will be offered monthly.

As the school year becomes increasingly busy, remember that RPL offers locker pickup of library materials for your convenience. When your “on hold” materials become available, simply go to the library’s website (www.reedsburglibrary.org) and select “Locker Pickup” from the menu on the left side of the page. Enter your library card number and your name, as well as the day and time of pickup. You may choose an “overnight pickup” to get your materials after hours. When you come to the library, stop in the loading zone on the east (Locust Street) side of the building, and scan your library card under the scanner next to the lockers. The locker will then automatically open for you to retrieve your materials.

For questions about any library program or service, call the library at 608-768-READ (7323) or email info@reedsburglibrary.org.
