Naturally speaking: Toxic jimsonweed

Some of the most toxic plants are quite pretty in spite of their negative characters. Include jimsonweed in this category.

Devil’s trumpet (genus: Datura), as it’s sometimes called, is toxic to all livestock and humans, with most cases involving cattle. Because the plant is unpalatable, poisoning is uncommon.

Pokeweed isn’t the most familiar plant.

The names vary, as well as the spellings, of this native plant.  Poke salad, poke sallet, inkberry, scoke and pigeonberry are some.

Uses vary, too, from medicine, food, dye, ink, wine colorant and many sources call the plant’s parts poisonous.
