Weston Elementary celebrates Global Handwashing Day

On Oct. 15, Weston Elementary School students took time to understand the importance of cleanliness.

School Nurse Brittany Niemeyer spent Global Handwashing Day visiting with children to talk about why this practice is important both in and outside of the home. She also shared a book, “The Day I Forgot to Wash My Hands.”

Children reviewed a photo of a germ and then were asked to illustrate an object or place they think may contain a lot of germs.

As part of the lesson, kids reviewed the best handwashing techniques to ensure all parts of the hands, like under fingernails, are cleaned.

Students also discovered where germs can be found, such as on doors, desks, bathrooms and playgrounds.

Handwashing is especially at the forefront of education due to the pandemic; it has been cited as one of the best ways to curb the spread of COVID-19.
